A Sonoma County native, Dave first became involved in the wine industry when he was just 16 years old, helping to pump-over fermenting wine tanks for a local winery after school during the harvest months. He quickly developed a passion for wine and viticulture, and after graduating from Sonoma Valley High School he enrolled in the viticulture program at the Santa Rosa Junior College. Taking classes during the day, and working for Benziger Family Winery at night and on the weekends, Dave consumed as much knowledge as he could about both vineyards and wine production. In 2001 he finished at SRJC and transferred to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo where he would go on to earn his Bachelor's Degree in Fruit Science with an emphasis in high-end viticulture.
For the next six years, Dave would go on to manage a cutting-edge pinot noir project near Bodega Bay for Benziger. It was here he was introduced to the Robledo family, as well as the art of grafting. Dave watched with care and curiosity as a highly experienced team of grafters cut the "heads" off the vines he had worked so hard to plant just a year before. These skilled men meticulously prepared and inserted a single pinot noir bud into a notch they carved into each vine, then quickly wrapped the graft union with tape and moved on to the next vine. Sure enough, about 10 days later he noticed the buds beginning to push and grow. Dave had no idea at the time, but this experience would go on to become the seed of Top-Notch Grafting.
Dave moved on from Benziger in the winter of 2007 and teamed up with Glenn Alexander at Bacchus Vineyard Management where he was Vice-President and Director of Operations. For the next two seasons, Dave was responsible for overseeing the management of 450 acres, and the successful grafting and t-budding of over 60 acres of ultra premium vineyards. Working with various grafting teams on numerous different projects, he noticed that while they all brought years of experience and know-how to each job, they all lacked the communication and customer service skills that are so necessary in today's world. Thus, Top-Notch Grafting was born, striving to provide its customers with the highest level of service, the wine-industry's most experienced grafters, and healthy, successful vineyards.
